Research Notes: Johannes Nicolaus Wehling was listed as a "Bedienter"farm worker, farm hand, at the Ilfeld estate in Hohenebra from 1861 to 1867. This estate (Gute) had a special history, since it was owned by the Ilfeld Monastery, located in the town of Ilfeld, about 42 kilometers north of Hohenebra and about ten kilometers north of Nordhausen.
Although Ilfeld belongs to the Federal State of Thueringen today, it belonged to the Hannover enclave " Grafschaft Hohnstein" until 1866, after that to Prussia. The Grafschaft Hohnstein included the towns of Elbingerode, Neustadt, Osterode, Appenrode, Niedersachswerfen, Leimbach, Urbach, Steierthal, Werna, Besenrode, Crimderode and Ilfeld. The special thing is that the former Monastery in Ilfeld ( A school from the 18th Century on) was an administrative district of its own and court residence within the Grafschaft Hohnstein.
The "subjects" of this Kloster Amt were the inhabitants of the town on Ilfeld, the inhabitants of seven estates near Ilfeld and the estates of Hohenebra and Kirchengel far south of Ilfeld. This means that some of the inhabitants of Hohenebra and Kirchengel were Hannover inhabitants although they lived in the middle of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. The 1791 Hannover encyclopaedia says that the inhabitants of the Nobel estate of Kirchengel belonged to the Amt, but had to pay taxes to Ilfeld. They surely paid taxes to the Schwarzburg-Sondershausen State, like all the other Hohenebra Inhabitants.
Note: The Hohenebra Baptismal records were checked through 1885 and no more Wehling Baptism records were found. The family probabley moved after 1872.
